Ice Scheduling Information

Kanata Minor Hockey Association (KMHA) strives to provide a balanced and fair allocation of ice time for all teams throughout the season.

In general:
  • Ice times are allocated with an approximate 50/50 split between practices and games for most divisions, though variations occur based on age group, league format, ice availability, and scheduling priorities.
  • Younger divisions (e.g., U7) emphasize practice-focused ice to support skill development, while older divisions (e.g., U18) prioritize more game ice due to seasonal structure and commitments.
  • The goal is to provide teams with an average of approximately two ice times per week (practices and/or games combined), subject to overall ice constraints, blackout periods, holidays, tournaments, playoffs, and other association events.
For interlock teams (such as U15 interlock):
  • Scheduling often prioritizes game commitments, including interlock games that may extend into March and beyond.
  • This can result in fewer association-allocated practice slots nearing the end of the season compared to the first half, particularly after the March break, as resources are directed toward supporting game schedules and other priorities related to the playoffs.
Practice ice in March and later in the season:
  • It is common across various levels for practice allocations to become more limited as the season progresses and the focus shifts toward games, competitive play, playoffs, and special events.
  • Some teams may have association-allocated practice ice, while others supplement their schedule by independently booking additional available ice slots (where permitted and available).
