Following the clinch of the Regular Season Championship, the Blazers prepared for their first ever playoff matches against the Silver Seven Black and then the Cumberland Grads. Both series resulted in hard fought victories sending them to the Championship where they faced the Nepean Raiders. After giving up leads in the first two games and having them end in ties, the Blazers didn’t let it get them down and overcame adversity clinching the series after 5 games. Their key to victory was playing as a team!

Congratulations and thank you to all the boys, you should be very proud of yourselves and to the coaching staff (Mike Eastwood, Dean Johnson and Ryan Coordinator. Risk and Safety and other KMHA executive members performed roving spot checks on all the KMHA sanctioned events/games and tournaments throughout the season for violations of Code of Conduct and the Parent/Spectator Code of Conduct and will continue to do so next season.

In regards to the Volunteers and requirements for volunteering with youth:

Number of Police Checks requested 2011/12 – 212 new KMHA Volunteer Letters were sent out

Number of Police Checks returned 2011/12 – 139 City of Ottawa Police checks were returned

Numbers of outstanding Police Checks 2011/12 – 73 still require to submit their Ottawa Police Form to KMHA Risk and Safety

This year, Risk and Safety concentrated on the House League Teams to ensure that valid Police Checks were submitted and only those with valid Police Checks were on the roster.

Next season 2012-2013, Risk and Safety will be concentrating on the Competitive volunteers’ requirements for screening while still maintaining the verification and screening for House Leagues.

Overall, from the Competitive and House Programs there are currently 211 KMHA volunteers who are on team rosters that require either a Police Check, Trainer Certification or a Speak Out course.

If you are going to volunteer for next season (2012/13), please ensure that your Police and Vulnerable Check is up to date, i.e. any Police Checks done before 2009, are no longer valid and a new one is required.

If you think that your Police Check is not valid or is about to expire, please contact me at riskandsafety@kmha.ca and we’ll work on getting you the KMHA Volunteer form needed to get a free Ottawa Police Check.

All KMHA members are strongly encouraged to beat the rush at the beginning of next season and request your KMHA Volunteer Letter now to get the City of Ottawa Police Check done for free.

You will not be permitted on a Team Roster until your Police check is submitted.

Speak Out and Trainers courses will be offered, dates to be confirmed for next season, please watch the KMHA website for more information.

Again, I thank all the KMHA members who displayed sportsmanship and meet the challenges with their players to ensure they continue to enjoy the game and have as much fun as their kids.

AJ Snyder
KMHA Risk and Safety
riskandsafety@kmha.ca

<div class="tweetthis" After first putting in time with the West Carleton Association, Chuck served as District 4 Chair for many years and in 2004 he was elected to ODMHA as the Zoning & Constitution Director. In 2006, Chuck was elected to the position of Second Vice President and remained in that position until his passing. As 2nd VP Chuck was responsible for coordinating and approving all of the Tournament Sanctions and for overseeing the Tournament of Champions each year, making sure that every successive year was better than the last. In addition to his assigned tasks, Chuck was a ready volunteer for any and all additional Committees.

It is no exaggeration that Chuck’s passing has left a huge hole in this Organization and he will be sorely missed.

Chuck’s obituary at the Ottawa Citizen

Condors and Blazers True Friends On and Off the Ice

KMHA in the Community

The Kanata Blazers Major Peewee AA and Major Peewee A teams, combined with players from many other Kanata teams, recently hosted the 2nd annual Friendship/Fundraiser game with the Capital City Condors at the Bell Sensplex. The interest has continued to grow, since the team was founded by Jim and Shana Perkins, as well as involvement from Honorary Captain Matt Carkner, with over 300 players now on a waiting list to play.

The Capital City Condors are an ice hockey team for youth who have been deemed ineligible to play on any other hockey team in the City of Ottawa due to a disability and Jim and Shana have made it possible for them to play. Players are ages 6 and up, of all ability levels and are each given a high degree of personal supervision by the Condors on-ice coaches where fun, skill development, sportsmanship and teamwork are highly emphasized.

The program is highly rewarding experience for the players, parents and volunteers as children who only dream of playing on a hockey team see their dreams come true and their abilities progress. The friendship game was able to raise $2,650 as well as a large amount of food collected for the Kanata Food cupboard and help demonstrate the support and acceptance of all abilities to play the great game of hockey.

Blazers Win Tournament of Champions

Competitive News

In a season in which the Kanata Blazers Minor Midget “B” only managed two regular season and no playoff games with a full lineup due to injury, they managed to cap off a successful season with a win at the Tournament of Champions (TOC) at the Westport Community Arena on Sunday April 8th. The Blazers were invited to the tournament as the top team in the OBMHL regular season. Decimated by injuries and the flu, the Blazers lost their semi-final playoff match up against Nepean in the OBMHL playoffs in three games on points 4-2 and had a three week layoff heading into weekend play. In spite of the long layoff they again found themselves with three regulars out of the lineup, two due to injuries.

The Blazers opened the TOC with a convincing 7-1 win on Friday afternoon over the Cornwall Colts who had gone 23-1-0 in their regular season in the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League. On Saturday morning they faced off against the Athens Aeros who had gone undefeated in their playoffs defeating the Colts with two wins and a tie to clinch their playoff Minor Midget championship. Kanata spotted the Aeros a 2-0 lead before storming back to hang on for a 3-2 win holding off the Aeros with 6 skaters to the Blazers 4 as they killed off a penalty in the last minute handing the Aeros their only loss since their regular season ended.

The Aeros then had to win an 8AM contest Sunday morning over the RWC Crusaders to set up another match up against the Blazers for the TOC title as the Champion of Champions. The Blazers got out to an early 2-0 lead and led by 4-0 heading into the third before surrendering a short-handed goal to make it 4-1. The Blazers got that one right back and secured the title of Champion of Champions with a 5-1 win.

This was the third year in a row that head coach Rob Levesque guided his team to the OBMHL regular season championship – a truly impressive run for many players who had been together since their first season as Minor Bantam “B” Champions.

Bell Sensplex 2012 Golf Tournament

Featured

KMHA in the Community

Bell Sensplex 2012 Golf Tournament - in support of KMHA Financial Assistance Program The 2nd Annual Bell Sensplex Golf Tournament is set to be held Friday May 25th, 2012 at the Loch March GC.
